Artist Statement

I am committed to the diversification and wider appeal of art as a fundamental aspect of living life fully.

My work begins with the imagining of a world, the sensations of that world, and the occurrences in that world. I build large-scale sculpted installations that often include time-based content. Working in multiple media and expressions, the material is in service to the vision. Fabric, fiber, chicken wire, and plaster, with dance, film, and text are all recurring elements. I love to create work in multiple iterations, building layers of depth, with one experience inside the next.

Forms that evoke movement, shaping the environment to our body, to an idea, assertive textures that attract/repel, and live interactions; are all fundamentals of my practice.

Dance, sculpture and fiber art have been in my life as long as I can remember, as such the line between performative art and static art is one that I challenge. The impact of being in the presence of the work, that day, that moment of being alive, is where the experience is grounded.

A passionate interest in grappling with big questions, and a lay pursuit of science and philosophy propel the themes in my work. I am committed that the creation of art be an active participant in the betterment of our symbiotic human experience.

About Julia

Wilkins creates interdisciplinary installation art, merging sculpture and fiber art with performance and film. A background in dance, performance art, fiber art and sculpture informs immersive environments, in which the audience can journey with the art.

As a resident artist at The Open Space for Arts and Community, Wilkins produced Solitude_The Exhibition, a 400 sq ft installation featuring sculpted walls and film.  Marking the third iteration of the Solitude series, this work premiered the film of Solitude_Live, an immersive event hosted by Catskill Art Space featuring her choreography on four dancers in an installation of sculpture, fabric, and light. At Fresh Winds Biennale in Iceland, her her large-scale sculpture CreationMyth, included a dance performed inside the sculpture at the festival’s opening.  Wilkins’ new collaborative film project Cicada, is currently being submitted to festivals, and has already gained a spot in some of these opportunities.  Her film Not Just Me, funded in part by a grant from Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, is now screening on the Watch Lucid art film site along with two of her other films.  The film of here there nowhere, a live performance and installation hosted by Solomon Arts Gallery, has screened in several film festivals.

Current projects include a new sculptural installation work Pre Sent, which is exploring fiber and plaster in an iterative work considering the nature of time, also, a knit fiber project is in development exploring painterly dyeing.

Wilkins began her artistic career after graduating from Tisch School of the Arts. She performed dance, dance theater, and aerial harness, worked as a teacher, and knitwear designer while maintaining her relationship with sculpture. Her early years were focused on ballet training and an ongoing relationship with a community of sculptors fostering a diverse artist development.

Since this time she has earned a black belt in Kung Fu, and now is an active practitioner of both Tai Chi and Qigong.
