Practice

An account of how the work is made — the materials, disciplines, and thinking that flow through every project.

"In an ultra-processed world, I am committed to the process, the origin, the building blocks.  I am always looking to layer and deepen the scope of my work."

Throughout my life, I have had multiple explorations in practice simultaneously. Now, all these seemingly disparate disciplines are flowing together in a way that is seamless and emboldens my reach for a new idea. Each concept, each body of work wants to be expressed in different mediums, in layers, in time.


I have always been drawn to the process of things. I am often struck by how powerful the initial stroke is — unfinished, incomplete, a whiff of its destination, the whole of its spirit is somehow free to be witnessed. I aim to maximize this, while also developing the work. Utilizing a second or third medium for the expression allows this initial impulse to stay present through the development.

Fiber

Fiber art practice began as a child, but more importantly when on tour as a performer, I bought some yarn to make a garment for myself. This initial idea grew into what was for many years an extension of my personal expression — garments, accessories, and home decor.


Now, I find myself in love and curious about the fiber itself, dyeing techniques, and the incredible textures of nature's bounty.

Sculpture

Sculpture began for me in my childhood, having the opportunity to practice with and be mentored by local artists whose studio was adjacent to the ballet school. This expression continued to develop mostly as a side practice, while I pursued a life as a performing artist.


Now central to my expression, I have moved from clay to plaster and multi-media. I am interested in how sculpture can form in space, how space impacts our experience of the visual, and I seek to make work that has volume, movement, and texture. I have not strayed far from the dance.

Performance

Performance was my core expression for the early years. My installation work continues to crave time-based experiences as an essential element, giving the viewer a chance to live with the work as an expression in time.

Film

Film has from the start been a consistent part of the iterative process of works that begin as performance or sculpture, but remain timeless in being captured on film. I also create work that begins as film and then becomes an installation experience.

Art You Live With

Knit design has been a long-standing practice, producing and selling my own creations and working as a hand-knitter for Calvin Klein. I am open to a conversation for designing and crafting a specific special something — wearables or decor.
